ST MARY'S HOSPITAL ULTRASOUND APPEAL

Out of pure desperation, St Mary's Hospital recently purchased a much-needed new ultrasound machine for our X-Ray Department. Our old unit was over 15 years old (the expected lifespan was just 5 years, showing the great care our staff took of this precious equipment) and it was condemned by the supplier so we really had no choice.

Saving lives
Our new machine diagnoses illness and saves lifes every day. Without it we could not do vital scans of pregnant mothers, many of whom are HIV+ and who need special care. With the new ultrasound machine doctors and midwives know how to prepare for the birth and plan care for vulnerable newborns. For other patients ultrasound means diagnosis and treatment for potentially life-threatening disorders such as abdomenal, kidney and heart complaints.

Serving the community
St Mary's now provides an ultrasound service to more than 21 community primary health care clinics situated in the inner west Pinetown area. Through us almost three-quarters of a million people from poor and disadvantaged communities now have access to this life-saving technology. In line with government policy, we offer ultrasound completely free to pregnant women and children under six.

We need your help
Our new machine cost R318 764-95 including VAT and while we give thanks every day for what it enables us to do, it has left our limited resources drained beyond capacity. We are now appealling to companies and organisations to consider making a financial donation to help us meet the cost of the machine and continue providing this life-saving service to some of our poorest communities.
